Toronto passes a law that pet stores can only sell rescue or shelter cats or dogs ~

This week – Toronto City Council voted unanimously to pass a bylaw prohibiting pet stores in Metro Toronto from selling cats or dogs unless they are sourced from the Humane Society, shelters or rescue groups. This was done in an effort to squeeze out of business puppy mills. People who wish to buy a dog or cat from a pet store can help to alleviate the growing problem of unwanted animals. The City Council pointed out the option of buying directly from a responsible breeder.

“The goal is to stop animal cruelty,” said Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker. “I think this is a wonderful day in the city of Toronto for anyone who loves cats, dogs, puppies, and wants to ensure animals are treated humanely.”

Blessings and thank you Toronto! You’re a wonderful Advocate for Animal Rights and I hope many others will follow your example~

  1. Wow, I hadn’t heard about this. But it makes sense…with all the little cats and dogs waiting to be adopted at the humane society it seems that they should get a chance to be seen. Not many people go to animal shelters to find a pet to adopt. Last year when I visited the one in my town I was surprised at how many pets there were. Fortunately they were all treated and cared for very well.

  2. Toronto shows great heart in passing this pro-active law for the right-to-life of these most vulnerable animals ~ How wonderful, Johannes, that you live in a place with such a compassionate heart ~

  3. THIS IS AWESOME. I CAN’T BELIEVE IT. AMERICA NEEDS TO FOLLOW SUIT! PLEASE SHARE THIS STORY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. NEVER BUY A PET FROM A PET SHOP! PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THAT WHEN THEY DO, THEY ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE PUPPY MILL INDUSTRY. PETLAND DISCOUNTS IN AMERICA ARE THE BIGGEST CULPRITS! THIS WILL PUT AN END TO PUPPY MILLS!

  4. Thank you Lisa for your support of ending puppy mills ~ I too hope the U.S. will follow suit in Toronto’s example ~ Here I found some information on the efforts in America ~

It’s great to see various cities in the U.S. have been working on legislation to stop the sale of puppy mill animals in pet store and encourage pet shoppers to go to local shelters or buy directly from a reputable breeder ~ It will save the lives of so many more rescue and shelter animals!

  5. WOW. If this will be passed, it could solve the problem of over population in dogs and cats. I think this is better than euthanasia.

  6. I love the support of advocates for Animal Rights – Thank you, Susan, for caring about the precious rescue and shelter cats and dogs ~
