Dog in Japan stays by the side of its ailing friend in the rubble

by Michael Starks

It’s a universal truth that dogs are man’s best friend, but they’re pretty darn loyal to their own as well. Case in point: this tear-inducing video, via the website Jezebel, showing a dog, shivering and disoriented, remaining loyally by the side of a stricken fellow canine amid the devastation of the Japanese tsunami.

The video is a stark reminder that, as was the case when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, there will likely be thousands of pets orphaned or involuntarily abandoned due to the catastrophe in Japan. If you’d like to help efforts to help these animals, you can find info on doing so here.

UPDATE: CNN and the UK Telegraph have both reported that the dogs have been rescued since the footage aired, and are both receiving veterinary care; the more seriously wounded dog is at a clinic in the city of Mito, while the protective spaniel-type dog is receiving care at a shelter in the same town.

Here is an English translation of the voiceover exchange between the two reporters in the clip (translation courtesy of Toshiyuki Kitamura):

We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty.

He has a collar. He must be someone’s pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.

Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead.

Where?

Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright.

The dog is protecting him.

Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

I can’t watch this. This is a very difficult to watch.

Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive.

Yes! Yes! He is alive.

He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon.

Oh good. He’s getting up. It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It’s just amazing that they survived through this all.

  1. Ahhhhhh ~ ~ ~ Yannaki, bless the animals too for this video shows how GREAT their hearts feel and care for one another ~

  2. More about the rescue ~ The canine duo in Sendai has since been rescued, according to Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support. “Many of you have been asking about the YouTube dogs. They have been rescued and are safe in Ibaraki Prefectre in the city of Mito. We are still waiting for ‘after’ photos but will let you know as soon as we hear an update on this.”

Involved with animal rescue in Japan, Kenn Sakurai wrote the following about the now famous canine duo: ”This is what it’s like when we could find the dogs at the actual disaster area. The white has gotten weak but the brown one is not allowing to get closer. The TV crew shot this. We have already got these dog. But it too two hours to take them to the closest shelter. The guys who had done that had the bigger plastic cage on the back of the bike. Having such weight on the back is risky for going the way with no road…Those two dogs are rescued. The one which came close to the camera is in the better condition. The other White, Gray and Black was weak. So it is in the vet clinic in Ibaraki Prefectre. The other dog is in the shelter of the same area. But please know that those two are just the tip of the iceberg. There are more and we need help.”

  3. Wow, Yannaki! Thanks for sharing this amazing story! It is so inspiring to see the loyalty of the one dog for the other, but also to see the compassion the rescuers have for them both. What a beautiful survival story! And, Coralina, thanks for the update, too!

It is said that long ago there were no language barriers between species. According to the stories, we could all Understand and speak with each other. It will be a wonderful day when that kind of communication is restored. Our animal counterparts have so very much to share with and teach us! They have great lessons in Love, loyalty, sharing, Forgiveness, Harmony, and many other of Life’s lessons.

  4. Such a touching story Yannaki. Thank you for sharing it. I hope both dogs will somehow find good homes somewhere in Japan. I pray for all in Japan…people, as well as animals.
Thanks for the update Coralina, and Mia I agree with you about the great lessons all animals have to share with us. Recently saw a very moving story, again about a dog’s loyalty. A movie called, “Hachi”, some of you might have already seen it. A story of a Japanese Akita dog and his owner, in this case played by Richard Gere. It’s based on a true story. If you haven’t seen it I do recommend it.
Peace, Love, and blessings to all…
