Inwards and Outwards

Everyday we absorb so much from the outer world into our bodies and minds. We absorb light from the sun, moisture from the air, liquids from the waters, food from the earth. We also absorb impressions into our minds via the senses, particularly through sight and sound. We see and hear both the good and the bad, the true and the false, the pure and the impure. We are truly blessed when we hear words spoken out of love or when we observe acts of kindness. These bring joy to the heart and a smile on our lips. But occasionally the outer world brings us things we do not wish to see or hear. On the television, in movies, in the newspapers, or by other means we learn of the tragedies and horrors of life that make us question the nature of existence and the fragility of the heart.

These things will always exist and the heart and mind will always be challenged. How do we love when our hearts have been broken? How do we trust when trust has been betrayed? How do we find peace amongst the confusion and noise of the world?

Since the outer world will always be a dichotomy of good and bad, happiness and sadness, love and hate, the wisest and most spiritual thing we can do is tend to the sanctuary within. We each need time daily to shut of the mundane world and enter into the Garden of the Spirit. Going inwards, closing off the outer world of the senses, and finding the silent center within, you can find that which is untouched by the outer. Grow this silence until it overtakes your being.

As the inner silence grows, your place in the world, amongst your friends, family and even strangers, will take on a new importance. No longer will you be just a face in the crowd; your very presence will be a fountain of serenity that others will sense. Do not underestimate your place in this world ocean. Know that you can transform all your inner darkness into the most luminescent purity that can profoundly change the world. Even the most subtle acts done out of love can heal one thousand hearts.

Do not be the cause for suffering. Be the cause for upliftment. Take care in your words so that they encourage and are truthful. Take care in your actions so that they do not cause sorrow but inspire only happiness and love. Take care so that your inner world becomes so pure and divine that the outer world can only be blessed with your presence while you walk your days here on Earth.
