{"id":1660,"date":"2010-12-09T23:56:46","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T23:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/divineearth.org\/main\/?p=1660"},"modified":"2010-12-09T23:56:46","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T23:56:46","slug":"gm-steps-closer-to-hydrogen-vehicles-infrastructure-in-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/divineearth.org\/main\/gm-steps-closer-to-hydrogen-vehicles-infrastructure-in-hawaii\/","title":{"rendered":"GM steps closer to hydrogen vehicles, infrastructure in Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>General Motors<\/strong> is another step closer <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 5px solid white;\" title=\"GM\" src=\"http:\/\/i.bnet.com\/blogs\/gm-hawaii-hydrogen-initiative-med.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"233\" \/>to making hydrogen vehicles in Hawaii a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Ten companies, agencies and universities have joined an initiative between GM and local energy outfit <strong>The Gas Company <\/strong>to bring\u00a0hydrogen-powered vehicles and a fueling infrastructure to Hawaii by 2015.<\/p>\n<p>(As a reminder, that target is a mere four years away.)<\/p>\n<p>The plan, called the <strong>Hawaii Hydrogen Initiative<\/strong> (or H2I for short), is part of a greater sustainability initiative  to\u00a0reduce the island state\u2019s 90 percent dependence on imported oil to  power its transportation industry.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, the state launched the <strong>Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative<\/strong> with the U.S. Department of Energy, aiming to generate 70 percent or  more of Hawaii\u2019s energy through energy efficiency and renewable energy  sources including solar, wind, wave, biofuels, and geothermal.<\/p>\n<p>The GM-TGC project aims to make hydrogen available to all 1 million residents of <strong>Oahu<\/strong>, Hawaii\u2019s most populous island.
