Inspection records show animals arriving to slaughterhouses dead or diseased
Poultry workers opened the doors of a chicken truck at a Toronto slaughterhouse in December, 2008, to find that nearly 1,500 birds had frozen to death in sub-zero temperatures during their final journey from the farm.
At about the same time, 16 neglected horses – animals so emaciated they had not developed winter coats – were sent to a meat factory in Lacombe, Alta., in an unheated truck as the thermometer dipped to minus 12 C. Government inspectors who witnessed their arrival took note of the incident but let the transport company off with a simple warning.
Those and other anecdotes are included in a report by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) to be released later this week that looks at the conditions in which animals intended for Canadian dinner plates are transported – often for the last time.

Offerings/donation: It is of the utmost importance that you come to class with an offering (read Yogi Bhajan's statement below). The offering should be made in the spirit of gratitude and can be in a monetary form, which is usually easiest, or a gift.
Recommended online class donation is $10.
"Itarashtam tithar Kashtam - empty handed you come, empty handed you go. It's a law which should never be broken. And you should (as a teacher) share freely, but never receive a student who comes empty handed - that's the law. If a person shall come empty handed, that person may sit here for six hours and do all kinds of yoga, but the moment he goes out of that door, he'll go empty handed. That's the only condition, and it's not up to you or me."

Health Benefits of Chocolate
I love chocolate as I'm sure the rest of you do as well, most especially our sweet Johannes/Sevara. ;-) Anyway, I limit my consumption because of course I try not to eat too many sweets, for obvious reasons. However, I forget that eating chocolate, most especially 'dark' chocolate, has it's benefits. Here is an article that I found on the subject. Makes me feel less guilty when I eat it!
From > About.com on Longevity
Chocolate is made from plants, which means it contains many of the health benefits of dark vegetables. These benefits are from flavonoids, which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the body from aging caused by free radicals, which can cause damage that leads to heart disease. Dark chocolate contains a large number of antioxidants (nearly 8 times the number found in strawberries). Flavonoids also help relax blood pressure through the production of nitric oxide, and balance certain hormones in the body.
Heart Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate:
Dark chocolate is good for your heart. A small bar of it everyday can help keep your heart and cardiovascular system running well. Two heart health benefits of dark chocolate are:

Top 5 Infections You Can Pick Up at Nail Salons
After reading this, I thought it important to post here on DE, since most of us love to pamper ourselves with a nice manicure & pedicure. Even though most
of us use extreme caution about the nail salons we visit, some of our friends and family members might not, so it might be a good idea to warn them of the possible health risks involved. 5 reasons I do my own pedicures!
Blessings,
Gitana
article by - Tom Scheve - howstuffworks.com
Most nail salons see a steady parade of business. Nails get cut and filed, feet soak in tubs, cuticles get pushed back and trimmed, calluses get buffed. And while the majority of nail salon visits won't send you on your way with anything other than an excellent manicure and pedicure, customers -- and salon workers -- are at risk of spreading disease.
How can a desire for well-groomed nails lead you straight to the doctor's office? All that buffing, clipping and trimming means that it's not uncommon for hands and feet to get nicked and cut. And wherever you have open wounds and a lot of skin-to-skin and skin-to-surface contact, you have a very good chance of picking up some gross bacteria or viruses.

California surfer receives whale of an escort during marathon paddle ~
April 1, 2010 - By Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com
When Southern California surfer Jodie Nelson set out Sunday to standup-paddle nearly 40 miles from Santa Catalina Island to Dana Point, she hoped it'd inspire her best friend, who has been involved in a long and exhausting struggle with breast cancer, to keep fighting.
Nelson, 34, whose mother and aunt are cancer survivors, also hoped her nine-hour test of endurance would raise money for two cancer charities and heighten awareness about a plight affecting millions of women.
What Nelson could not have known was that a 30-foot minke whale would swim alongside her 14-foot board and accompany the surfer as she stood and paddled for two of those nine hours, thus joining the cause.
"It was a day that all of us involved will never forget," Nelson said, in reference to Angela Robinson, her best friend, and the rest of a crew aboard an escort boat.
Aluminum poisoning.....dangers of toxicity
www.drpepi.com/aluminum-poisoning.php.....Many of us are not aware of the different places aluminum lurks in our own house, even the food supply is tainted with the highly toxic metal. Although manufacturers are aware of the dangers, it is still widely used. I have never cooked with aluminum pots or pans, but did not realize that aluminum can seep out S.S pots as well during cooking. My husband is doing a job for the Nike shoe co. right now, which involves many people handling a large amount of aluminum displays. Needless to say he taking every precaution for himself and the workers. Still it is good to be informed in order to avoid this toxic metal...read on..
Compassionate Acupuncture - How Does it Work?
Chinese Medicine is based on a functional system comprised of the theories of Yin and Yang, Five Elements, Zang Fu, Meridians, Spirit, Qi, Blood, Body Fluids, Five Emotions, Six Exogenous Pathogenic Factors, etc. The five Zang organs are the lung, heart, spleen, liver and kidney; and the six Fu organs are the large intestine, small intestine, stomach, gallbladder, urinary bladder and triple burner. The acupuncturist characterizes the functional disturbances of the Zang-Fu organs with the help of eight diagnostic criteria, namely: Yin and Yang, Interior and Exterior, Deficiency and Excess, Cold and Heat.
