December eco-challenge
This month's eco-challenge is to switch your home cleaning products to eco-friendly ones. Remember that the shampoo, toilet cleaners, dish washing and laundry detergents that we use may contain toxins, bleach, or chlorine that find there way into our lakes and rivers. Here are some alternatives:
BASIC INGREDIENTS FOR NON-TOXIC CLEANER RECIPES
Five basic ingredients serve as the building blocks for many safe home cleaning needs:
1. Baking Soda - Cleans and deodorizes. Softens water to increase sudsing and cleaning power of soap. Good scouring powder.
2. Borax - Cleans and deodorizes. Excellent disinfectant. Softens water. Available in laundry section of grocery store.
3. Soap - Biodegrades safely and completely and is non-toxic. Available in grocery stores and health food stores. Sold as liquid, flakes, powder or in bars. Bars can be grated to dissolve more easily in hot water. Insist on soap without synthetic scents, colors or other additives.
4. Washing Soda - Cuts grease and removes stains. Disinfects. Softens water. Available in laundry section of grocery store or in pure form from chemical supply houses as "sodium carbonate."
5. White Vinegar or Lemon Juice - Cuts grease and freshens.

GSE & h202
I need to correct what i said about h202 that you buy in the store, as I'm sure everyone caught it. H202 is diluted to 3% @ drug stores etc.,not 35%.I am still looking for a website connected to this product to give more accurate info , Sorry ,I should have been more prepared to give info. However I do have the website for the GSE. It is nutribiotics.com this is such a good antibacterial agent Iuse it alot, as I said before. One more goody ,when you combine 1/pt baking soda w/1pt celtic seasalt & add a little of your favorite oil eg,/ peppermint or clove etc. It makes a fantastic tooth whitener. Not to mention freshener and disinfects as well. Some people I know use it everyday without any abrasion problems, But use to your own discretion. Then rinse with peroxide and it can be a very effective cavity prventative. My dentist says cavities are caused alot from bacteria as well as other things. Thanks for all the great posts everyone!
Happy Houses
I've been using vinegar, baking soda and borax as far back as I can remember and totally agree ... it works great and is eco-friendly.
I'll just mention a couple of things in case anyone might not already know this.
To keep drains flowing I use half a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar. Sprinkle the baking soda into the drain and pour in the vinegar. It sizzles, cleans and deodorizes the drains (keeps the garbage disposal fresh). You can use about 3 cups of boiling water instead of the vinegar or both but I do this the quick and easy way and it works.
For baked on food, rinse the pan or dish with hot water, sprinkle some baking soda, spray with some vinegar and watch the sizzle. In a few moments the stuck food is easily removed.
We have vinyl siding on our house. Borax (a thick mixture of borax and water) applied with a broom or cleaning brush, not only will clean the mold it will penetrate into the siding sections and prevent mold from building up much longer than Clorox. This would work on any areas where mold is a problem ... make a paste of borax and leave it on the area as well as applying it into cracks or spaces where you can't see it using a putty knife.
I keep a spray bottle with straight 5% vinegar for cleaning and I mix a variety of vinegar solutions for general cleaning. The best window cleaner (and this works great for general cleaning as well). I keep a spray bottle of purified water, 1 tablespoon (more or less depending on size of the bottle) vinegar, add a few drops of liquid soap (I use Basic H) and I add a few drops of either juniper berry, lemongrass, lemon, or peppermint oil (all very nice fragrances and neutralizes the vinegar odor so you don't have to wait for that to go away). Choose your own favorite fragrances but these work especially well as they have such a fresh clean scent.
Wow, thank you all for your input here. Some really great ideas for cleaning, grooming, medicinal and good for the environment too!
great input
I have been using the environmental household cleaning products for a few months now, and they work great... I have a few stores in town that have the organic section with all that I need. Also, I have started to use the "green" laundry detergent, and it's the same as the others detergents out there, but not as much fragrances, but I can live without that :) Also the dry sheets... I switched to the paper ones, instead of the regular ones.
A couple of weeks ago, I have bought an All Purpose Cleaner made from grapefruit and something else (as I am not home I can't look at the label now), but it doesn’t clean as well as other. I will use it until I finish it, but then I will look into some of your suggestions. Lots of input on the subject, and great ideas! I have never heard some of them :)
Suncather, I'll take you up on you pipe unclogging “recipe", as I have started having some problems with the bathroom sink :)
Thank you all for the input...it's amazing when great minds think alike what you can uncover :)
wow
There are lots of great ideas for cleaning on here. I can not wait to try them all. I love all the natural soaps you can buy this time of year. They always work best for me. Part of my Aryvetic practice training is to do hot oil self massage every night. It is said that after a while you do not need washing soap in the bath every day as the natural oil is a cleaning agent for debris. This is a great idea and my skin has never felt so soft especially in these cold Canadian winters to put warm coconut oil all over you body every night feels great.
Massage
Sounds like heaven Queen! I have a natural olive oil based soap that is great, but I like the coconut oil massage idea. I can get hubby to do that for me.
Hmmm, just gotta find the oil.
Massage
I buy my coconut oil in the health food store. You can cook with it also. It is in a solid form and you melt it to use for massage. Almond or sesame oils are also nice but I like the coconut oil best. Olive oil is great for your hair but I find it a bit thick for massage. I know I have tried natural oatmeal soap and that is my favorite. I am sure olive oil soap is nice also. I think it is important to put natural oils on your face and body. That would be very nice if you husband would apply it for you.
from nature
Natural, pure and simple ingredients seem to be the best for our health and environment ~ Great Eco challenge!
I always have the box of baking soda in my refrigerator for freshness ~
Putting lemon or orange wedges down the kitchen garbage disposal is another long time tradition for me ~
All the ideas presented here are great and I was trying to think of something new to add to the discussion ..
For now the only new item I can think of if a hair product that has been getting a lot of attention lately - It is a "all natural" ingredient hair shampoo and conditioner that thickens and strengthens the hair and makes it shiny and healthy - but what is unique is that it is made from the bean/nut of a rainforest tree in Central America from the Miskito Indian tribe. The Miskito live very much as they did in the 1500s when Columbus encountered them on his fourth voyage along the Caribbean coast.
I don't want to advertise a particular product but just for understanding it - the name of the hair product is called Ojon. It is named after the Ojon tropical tree that the oil is extracted from in the remote tropical rainforests of Central America. In the Miskito's native language, they are called"Tawira" or "the people of beautiful hair."
The Ojon oil is harvested and extracted by hand by the Tawira using traditional methods. A lengthy and time-comsuming process but the producers of the product did not want to change one thing about the Tawira's traditions and they have stated to employ thousands of Tawira producers with full-time jobs and at the same time committed to preservation of the rainforest and following strict safety standards and rainforest preservation - making sure their harvest does not deplete the forest in anyway. The manufacturer of the Ojon hair product also contribute to a fund that helps the Tawira preserve their way of life and their precious rainforest for the benefit of us all ~
No Wonder
Why you have such beautiful hair Coralina. You must get asked al the time as to what you use.
Will check your links out, Thanks!
blush
Thanks Lightdance ~ I never know how to react to a compliment ..pulling the blanket over my head..
Blankies
Just accept it for what it is and know that is it is true.
It was said and it was meant. No blankets needed.
I've tried it
Yes, Ojon is a good product. An acquaintance of mine is married to one of the founders...I think it is a Canadian company...(they are - I just checked online and they are based in Burlington, 15 minutes from me). I'm surprised you knew about it in CA.
great!
Wonderful Sevara that you know the product and friends with the founders!
It is a remarkable product and story - I didn't realize they are based in Canada close to you - The more I read about the company and the whole experience of their connection and research in the rainforest and the native people who live there - the more fascinated and impressed I became with the company and product ~
Their website states Ojon products are not tested on animals.
Everything about the product seems to be conducted with the highest integrity ~
Here are a couple of links from the Ojon website on how Denis Simioni discovered Ojon and another link on how Ojon is made - a slow process in the tradition of the native people who live in the Central American rainforest ~

Natural
Washing soda is called I beleive Baking Soda here.
Also don't forget peroxide which has a multitude of uses.
For cleaning I use it in a spray bottle for disinfecting things such as countertops or cutting boards of any kind, even the toilet seat. It can lso be used in your laundry instead of oxy products. Cheap and effective. Of course we all know what it does as a wound cleanser, mouth rinse, etc.
Borax I can't praise enough! It gets out stains, softens and freshens your laundry. It is a natural mold inhibitor, so I use it to keep mildew out of the bathroom and us it to freshen and clean up in the toilet bowl. You can use a solution to wash your floors or anything else. It sweetens the air as it cleans.
Having asthama and two dogs and enduring flood waters, I needed to come up with natural solutions to everyday (and not so ) messy problems. We faced the possibiltily of MOLD but it never had a chance using these products for cleaning.
The list says it all, plus my two cents worth with what I could think of in the moment.
Very Good topic Divine Earth. Thanks for spreading the word on this.
One more thing. Here in the US there is a product called Method which is all natural. I love the grapefruit cleaner. It reallyl smells like pink grapefruit and does a wonderful job of shining things up. They make alot of different products for various needs and are not expensive either.
pink grapefruit
I like the idea of the grapefruit cleaner, Lightdancer ~ If I come across it - I would like to try it!
Method
Coralina,
It's really great stuff. Here is some info on it..
And the link on whre to get it in California:
http://www.methodhome.com/support/store_locator.php
spray - pink grapefruit
method is made with naturally-derived surfactants. It works by absorbing dirt rather than chemically degrading it. And method is biodegradable so you can clean your home without flushing super-toxic chemicals down the drain into our rivers, lakes and oceans. We're against that. Dirty doesn't have to roll downhill.
ingredients
corn and coconut derived surfactants
soda ash
potassium hydrate
biodegradable surfactant
fragrance oil blend
color
purified water
no rinse needed
It is not necessary to rinse a surface after using method's products since the formulas are non-toxic, non-hazardous and safe. With the spray cleaners, simply spray and wipe.
thanks!
Sounds great! Thanks Lightdancer for the information ~ I think citrus is such a fresh and clean fragrance too ~
method & natural cleaners
Yes, method is great stuff we use it also, if you are near a Target dept. store they sell it.(hope thats permissable to say!) Anyway there is another product I'd like to mention as well, I use it for getting out tough stains in the laundry, like ink, grease, anything thats hard to get out. I'ts not really a laundry product and I discovered it as an experiment I was doing ,because I know grapefruit conct. is a very potent product. Anyway I use grapefruit seed exstract (aka. GSE ) for this as well as many other uses. Internally is a powerful cleanser, whenever we have a cold or sore throat coming on ,a few drops in watyer or juice helps right away. I buy it at any local healthfood store. Another great product for cleaning and health is food grade h2o2, better known as hydrogen peroxide 32%. To use this product however you must dilute to the proper % you need it. This is an all natural way to disinfect and clean anything! Just be careful if you have children they should probably not hanndle this until they are older. We keep the full strenghth bottle of the solution in our freezer and make up bottles for use around the house as we need it. We also use it in rinse water for dishes as an extra preventative against germs. I know people who put in their swimming pools instead of chlorine! It works great as long as you dilute it to the right consistency. Regular h2o2 which is diluted to 32% can be bought at a drug store, which isn't strong enough for dishes, cleaning etc. But ask at your local HF>store if they can order it . Iwill look up more info about how to get this in local places We're able to get it in bulk through our buisness. We also take it internally as a source of oxygen!
h202
Sorry h202 is actually 35% as you said.
h2o2
A few years back I was ordering the h2o2 online to take it internally as a source of oxygen. My chiropractor adivsed it for me. I did feel a difference while taking it.
Thanks for sharing alegria, and reminding me to start again.
As for Method I do get mine at Tarjay as they have the best prices. My grocery store also sells it, as well as certain drugstore chains.
Lots of great input here from all so I thank you all for sharing.
Medicinal Too
I recently found an article regarding the many medicinal qualities of hydrogen peroxide. I haven't had a chance to read all the content although I printed a section for review. Should anyone be interested in this find, here is the link:
http://www.drdavidwilliams.com/
Thank you Alegria for reminding me of this. I gather lots of info and set it aside until I have time to review it more thoroughly. This is one I had forgotten about. You mentioned you take it internally for oxygen ... You use the 35% food grade? And how do you administer this? I have heard many times the oxygen in our air is much lower than it used to be. This may be beneficial for all of us.
