October Eco-challenge
Fall is pretty much here, and the leaves on threes are changing color and piling up on the ground. It's a wonderful time to take a walk in nature! So here's this month's eco-challenge.
Set aside one day per week to go for a nature walk
Bring a bag
pick up at least 3 pieces of garbage
You may want to bring a pair of gloves for hygienic reasons
We each have to be the keeper of the planet and someone has to pick up the garbage that other people carelessly leave behind. Why not us? This sets a good example and will inspire others to do the same, or at least be responsible for their own mess.

Wonderful
Nothing like diving into a nice pile of fresh leaves. Oh the smell! Got the bags in the car with some gloves.
Imagine a fresh white snowfall falling on clean ground. That would be beautiful!
Fantastic
Great idea DivineEarth! And so creative ASprout ... I'm definitely going to take you up on that idea.
From now on I'll just carry a large garbage bag in my car. Our rural roads seem to be a catch all for empty cans, discarded beer cartons and the like. At a recent Town Hall meeting discussing efforts to pave the county roads (I didn't go to this one but I got the full report), the problem of trash on the roads was discussed .... However, no one, not one individual suggested a community effort to remove this trash. Just because one didn't put it there doesn't mean they can't clean it up. This a good example of how things get so out of hand with regard to environmental problems, pollution, corporate control, etc. ... by leaving the responsibility to others when there are "no others" except those irresponsible in the first place.
You gave me a great idea .... I'll post an editorial and use your suggestions with a few thoughts of my own and generate a community effort.
My nature walk was great today ... just stopping and taking the time ... was great!
nature walk
This is a wonderful idea! The nature walks where I live are mostly along the ocean shore and the salt air and sound of the waves invigorate my spirit ~
But it is so true! Even though we have clean up crews along the beach ... there is always more bits and pieces of a new garbage in the sand and along the grassy paths on the cliffs everyday ~
Here - there is a nice long paved walkway between the grass ... above the beach in Carlsbad and little squirrels live in the hillside and peek out as I walk by ~ It is one of my favorite walks ~ Next time I will take some gloves and bag to help keep it looking clean ~ It won't be hard to do because there are some trash containers along the walk ~
What a great idea for this month's challenge - Thanks Divine Earth - It helps our planet and makes us feel good about ourselves too ~
great
This sounds like a great idea. I will be sure to do this as I love to go out into nature a few times a week. Nature does need our help!
Great Challenge
Fabulous idea DivineEarth. May I add something I do with my kids on our nature walks? We often pick up garbage while walking but we also collect treasures. For example, leaves to make placemats for Thanksgiving dinner or fall table setting. Treasures can also be arranged to make a nature table in your home based on the season.
Leaf Placemats
What You Need:
A variety of leaves
Wax Paper
Scissors
An iron
A damp towel ( make sure you wring it out)
Collect a variety of different leaves. Let them dry out completely in a book or somewhere to keep them flat.
Cut two pieces of waxed paper the size of a placemat in any shape.
Arrange the leaves creatively on one piece of waxed paper and then place the second piece on top.
Place the damp cloth over the placemat and then press the iron down hard without sliding it side to side. Lift and repeat to cover the entire place mat.
Let cool and dry. Copper or gold foil or fabric edging and a glue gun can be used to dress up the edge for a formal dinner.
This can also be hung in your window as a suncatcher. Enjoy!

Fun alfalfasprout
I used to do that when I was little. What a fun project for children to learn about nature.
Good idea
Good idea, A-sprout! Preserving the ecology should be fun!
