Kitchen Table Wisdom

How many of you have read "Kitchen Table Wisdom" by Rachael Remen MD? This book was given to me by a nurse. I thought that I wouldn't read it, but ended up finishing it in just under a week (I liked it so much I couldn't put it down). I was picking at it while on break at work, trying not to wet my shirt too badly with tears. I have never read such a healing collection of stories. Each of the chapters is about two or three pages. Rachael has been a cancer councilor for about 30 years. The stories she shares touch at the heart of life and prove that we are all deeply connected. When you read about someone else's pain, you feel that it is your pain. Someone's healing becomes your healing. You will also get a broadened gratitude from reading it.

a blog on cancer another request to start that Sevara

I think a blog on cancer is a great idea. I do not know anyone with cancer in person at this time however it is such a predominate illness in these days I think it is good wisdom for us all to learn and apply to our life’s. There seems to be a great start here with all these books and websites to view.

My German educated naturopathic doctor has been doing allot of work with cancer survivors and the concepts of Homeopathic-Cytosymbiotic Regulation this website might prove to be an interesting reading for optimal health and vitality. She is located near Ottawa but I have found it to be worth the trip annually which can be followed by long distance phone calls. http://www.freitaghomeopathics.com/

If we can create a body that is designed for heath in our youth perhaps these diseases will not affect us in our older age. I believe that diet, vitamins and herbs are what are required in addition to meditation, physical activities such as the ones Johannes is an expert on (Kundalini Yoga and Qi Gong), and Ayurvedic studies could also be helpful to create a healthy body environment that is why I am starting to study this in the fall.

Soya milk tastes much better than regular milk once you start to drink it. However if you need to drink regular cows milk Coralina chose the one that is organic as it does not have the cancel causing grown hormones in it.

milk

Good advice ForestSpiritQueen regarding the differences in milk products ~ I have a favorite market here called Henry's Market - I bet Shane knows it since he lived here for awhile but it is a very popular natural foods grocery store ... So I buy the organic non fat milk from Henry's ~ Soy is good too and have many soy products in my cooking ~

Almond milk

After reading a lot of negative things about soy products I switched to almond milk. I consume very little of it as it is, as I use only when I eat cereal once in a while. For drinking, I just go with filtered water. Soy beverages may be okay if they do not contain maltodextrin and are organic certified.

Almond Milk

Almond Milk is the most delicious substitute! It is easy to buy in the health store and some supermarkets. I love it to and have used if for 5 years now. I agree the only time you really need it or Soya milk is on cereal once in a while. Filtered water is off course the best idea for a beverage especially with some fresh lemon in it. I also bought allot of organic herbal tea's at the vegetarian festival last weekend they are very health for you and taste so great. The Soya milk I use has organic soy beans with filtered water it does not have malt dextrin so I think I am safe. Thanks for letting us know about that. I would be interested in hearing more about the negative affects of soy products as I have allot of Asian friend that use allot of them.

Lime

Instead of lemon, try using lime. Lemon is very acidic, whereas lime is alkaline - much better for you!

soy products

Interesting Sevara ~ I have seen Almond milk in the health food stores but never tried it - I read that its origins go back to ancient times ....

I really do not drink very much milk at all ... and I will take your advise about avoiding any soy products I buy with maltodextrin ~

There is one soy product that I grew up on and would be very hard for me to live without - that is tofu ~ I buy the all natural product at Henry's market ~ When I'm at a restaurant I'm trusting in the high standards of the restaurants that serve only the best tofu ...hopefully ~

It's a great meat substitute (mainly how I use it... even on kebabs) and the Buddhist monks were one of the first to discover its wonderful qualities in their vegetarian diets - (Made from soy milk and high in protein, low in calories, contains iron and has no cholesterol and depending on the coagulant used in manufacturing, the tofu may also be high in calcium) ~

Never read it...

...but it sounds like it had quite an impact on you. I'll try to check it out!

cancer

Yes Sevara ~ Shane's reaction to this book makes quite a statement and worth looking into ~

And Shane ... I wish my sister could have read this book when she was going through her cancer treatments ~

On the subject of cancer - for anyone facing this painful and dark situation in their lives ... Deepak Chopra has a book available in his book store entitled "Embracing Body, Mind and Spirit in the Face of Cancer". Shane, you may be very familiar with Deepak's wellness center here in Carlsbad California in North San Diego County since you lived here at one time ... but he has an extensive book list that I like to brows through from time to time ~

Some excerpts from his website ... "Fulfilling a lifelong dream of creating a center which focuses on enhancing health and nourishing the human spirit, Deepak Chopra, M.D. and David Simon M.D. opened The Chopra Center For Wellbeing more than a decade ago...

Embracing Body, Mind and Spirit in the Face of Cancer

"Over the course of a lifetime, almost half of all North American men and nearly 40% of North American women will get cancer."

avoiding cancer

I love Chopra. My dad was a big fan and reader. I'm currently working with his "Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire." I also love his book "Peace is the Way." In it he tells why and how war starts.

There are a couple good books by Herman Aihara on macrobiotics. One is "Acid and Alkaline" the other is "Basic Macrobiotics." If you Goggle "macrobiotics" you will get endless talk about how it is a sham. The founder of macrobiotics, George Ohsawa, had a student who distorted his teachings. This student is the most noted proponent of macrobiotics. He makes poor claims and strays from science. He is the cause of much of the bad reports. George once visited Albert Schweitzer in Africa and intentionally contracted a jungle disease. He then eliminated it through diet. Before meeting George, Herman was on the verge of insanity. By eating a diet based on macrobiotic science his mental and physical health was restored. He went on to do some intensive scientific collegiate studies, and eventually expanded George's work.

Herman brakes down the science of macrobiotics in an easy to understand manner. He gives tables for the nutritional content of food and explains how to mix them for proper nutrition. The basic idea is that when our blood is slightly alkaline, we have the ideal condition for proper immune function. When the blood moves toward acidity, DNA mutation will eventually occur. This is said to be the beginning of cancer. Acidity depletes oxygen and slows circulation. Foods that cause acidity are sugary foods, alcohol, excess protein, excess breads which turn into sugar. Macrobiotics recommends a diet that is mostly whole grain with some vegetables. Milk is to be avoided, most meat as well. Fruit is taken sparingly.

In "Spontaneous Healing," by Dr Weil, a story is told of a man (a doctor) who develops acute lymphoma. He decides to approach it non traditionally. By employing a macrobiotic diet for eleven months his cancer exits his body through open sores on his hands. When he went off the diet the cancer reappeared. He then went to a clinic in Tijuana, where he said he received the most compassionate and intelligent care. They started him on a natural remedy and his cancer was again eliminated. I spoke with a woman at the grocery store who told me that her son in law was cured of cancer by a Chinese herbologist. His cancer also exited through sores on his hands.

I haven't yet had to face cancer. I don't follow a macrobiotic diet as I love fruit. If I found cancer in my body I would go macrobiotic.

macrobiotics

Great information, Shane ~ Natural I feel is always best and I wish my sister had known and considered these alternative methods of treating her cancer ... She was treated with chemo and radiation ... and I saw first hand how painful these treatments were because I was the one that drove her to and from her treatments at the hospital and saw how sick and nauseous she became in the car after every treatment ...

My mom also has fought cancer and now refuses any further chemical treatments . ..

"Macrobiotics recommends a diet that is mostly whole grain with some vegetables. Milk is to be avoided, most meat as well. Fruit is taken sparingly." From your description of a macrobiotic diet, my mom is pretty much on that kind of diet already so that's good to know ... For myself, I don't drink that much milk and when I do (mainly with my cereal in the morning) I use nonfat milk only. Also I do not eat a lot of meat ... maybe some seafood, fish but I try to go vegetarian when possible ... and I did not know about taking fruit sparingly to treat cancer - but now I will be careful not to eat too much fruit ~ So far I have been blessed not to face cancer myself but it seems to run in my family - My doctor has informed me of my increased chances because of my family history so I want to be careful and take preventative steps now ~ Thanks so much for the insight ~

B17

As I am not a doctor, I cannot give medical advice on something as critical as cancer. However, I'd like to recommend to everyone that they do their own research in to vitamin B17. It is know to be extremely effective in the battle against cancer and it is natural. Apricot seeds contain plenty of B17; they say if you eat 5 apricot seeds a day you'll never get cancer. So, Coralina, do your own reasearch as this may be something that is beneficial for you. Eventually, hopefully soon, I'll make a complete blog about this.

Here is a link for more info on B17, also known as Laetrile:

nature's cure

From your link - "Vitamin B17 which is naturally found in many foods like strawberries, cashews and apricot kernels is harmless."

Cashews are my favorite nut, Sevara - I always felt guilty about it because I think they have a higher fat content than many other nuts ... but now that you made me aware of their high B17 content and the benefits against cancer - I can feel good when I eat a cashew!

I know cancer is something that has touched everyone's lives in one way or another (family, friends or yourself) so I think a blog on cancer would be extremely helpful to so many and would continue the uplifting path of light DE has brought to so many ~
