questions on meditation

Sevara is it required to combine chanting with meditation, while meditating ? If yes, does the chanting need to be necessarily out loud ?

Namaste !

Thank you! It helps to know, and to be able to develop a "routine" from the begining.

Chanting

Chanting is a useful tool for keeping the mind focused within. We've all experienced the mind jumping like a monkey from thought to thought, worrying about what we have to do, what we should have done...etc. Chanting is a way for the mind to keep busy while we attempt to reach inner stillness.

Beyond simple chanting we move towards the power of sound current of certain Mantras. Naad is the essence of all sound, and is the basis for Naad Yoga, which is an aspect of Kundalini Yoga. Naam, or vibrational identity, is our expression of this - what we vibrate, we become. By chanting out loud our body acts as a soundboard, absorbing and amplifying the vibration, much like the body of a guitar when the strings are plucked. This also helps us with our power of projection at the navel center (3rd chakra, the Manipura). Further, the tongue will activate meridian points in the upper palate that stimulates the hypothalmus.

By chanting Mantras, the combination of words, breath, and their rhythm along with mental focus, elevates the power of the sound current or vibration to the level of Guru, also known as Shabd Guru. A Shabd is a sound current that dissolves the part of the ego the keeps the truth from being revealed. Through the power of the Shabd we attain Anahat - a state where your body and consciousness becomes the vibration.

This is a wealth of information thank you Sevara. You are surely and expect on this matter. I have a cd on "chakra chants" that I find fun by Jonathan Goldman. It feels great when I listen to it. It takes me to a higher level.
