Light Absorption ~Sleep Health
We have all know that getting enough sunshine is crucial to vitamin D.
But did you know that visual natural light consumption is imperative to health.
I had the honor to train with a PHD of light sciences this week in Atlanta. I was memorized by the light science that is now know that co-relate health issues to visual natural light consumption.
In man-created lighting environments, we can design a system that creates moods for dining, play, and work. If we increase the level of the Kelvin ( light temperature) we produce blue/purple light. In China, most factories emit 5000-65000 Kelvin temperature very blue-purple to keep workers awake and what I tend to think, narrow mind focused.
Just imagine when you look thru a hole in a paper how well you can see an object near or at a distance, same thing with bright temperature light, it narrows the pupil to create a intense focus, I believe this is also has a great effect on the mind.
Just as when you enter a dim lit restaurant, at 200-2300 Kelvin, orange-red-yellow, your pupil widens and your level of thoughts soften and rests.
The lighting designed into a space has a grand effect on shoppers, workers and children. I am extremely upset about the fluorescent used in hospital nurseries, the blue and purple light can be seen in almost ultra violet view by a brand new baby and is extremely harmful not only to the baby’s eyes, but to their Nero- perception and I believe has lasting effects. Luckily, there is new programs in place to remove this lighting, but for me it is not fast enough.
So what was most important is the fact that sunlight, not electric light, possesses a color band that cannot be duplicated or replaced, it is on the lower spectrum of color, and without this being consumed visually, it offsets melatonin and creates a backflow of chemical imbalances that are cumulative and go on to create aliments.
I had a client today that I worked with that cannot sleep and has started to have swelling in her legs. I asked her how much sunlight she gets a day, and she said maybe 10 minutes, "but I bought light bulbs that are full spectrum light." Here we have a clear example of visual natural light depletion, that is now altering her physical chemical balance.
~My light prescription, Sit in direct sunlight with 10 orange, 10 red apples and 10 lemons lined together ( yes, seriously) in a square. By her looking at these colors in Natural sunlight 20 minutes 2 x a day, she will re-set her light-cone perception behind her retina-photoreceptors in her eyes, which will reset her endogenous circadian clock , which will resent her melatonin cycle and will reset a slew of chemical that depend on light and melatonin to correctly balance the body.
Only natural sunlight has the correct colors to work this powerfully.
There were a lot of complex scientific words and light formulas I took notes on with the scientist, which their complexities elude my comprehension today, but here is the basics of what I learned.
The circadian system( the human clock) (effected by natural and manmade light) allows organisms to anticipate the changes that occur in our 24 hour environment, establishing a stable relationship between the endogenous rhythms and the external world. This relationship is crucial for well-being of human subjects.
The endogenous circadian clock drives daily endogenous rhythms in most physiological processes such as melatonin secretion and the sleep-wake cycle, thus effecting all chemical activities in the body

So, grab a glass of herbal tea, put on some sun block, and go stare at beautiful natural colors in the sun….and have a great rest tonight!!

1. Man's battle against nature
Before artificial light was developed man had to live in accordance with the cycles of the sun and moon. Before Edison there were only candles, so we relied primarily on the light provided by the sun to do our activities. And so it had been for millions of years. Now, as maelight points out, we no longer rely on the sun, and some people hardly see it at all. This goes against the way our bodies have evolved and of course this causes more problems than we realize.
In yoga there is a practice known as Surya Yoga (widely unknown and untaught) which involves absorbing energy from the eyes through the sun. Even though most are unaware of the process, we all get a little in this way as soon as we walk outside in the daylight. The safest time to do this practice is at sunrise when the sun is at about a 5 degree angle. This provides a unique array of light frequncies which have healing and energizing properties.
We all need get a little more sunshine in our lives for health, happiness, and inner and outer radiance!
2. Sunlight healing ~
I find this topic so nurturing to the soul and love reading all the insightful and fascinating thoughts of all ~
I have never heard of Surya Yoga, Divine Earth, but I am up to see the sunrise everyday - so Surya Yoga is something I can practice with my morning meditations~ Blessings for this insight and revealing the little known Surya Yoga with us all ~

3. Dear Maelight ~
Artifcle sunlight ~
Maelight, this is a fascinating topic and thank your for sharing your knowledge through your work and studies of light! ~
It is amazing how far reaching the importance of sunlight is to our health and well being ~
One of my co-workers gave me a special table lamp for my office ~ It has pretty pastel stars and moons painted on the shade but what is special about it is the large and unusual looking bulb inside ~ She told me it is a sunlight bulb that emits the light similar to natural sunlight with healing properties of the sun ~ I don't know if this is possible or not ..but have it in the corner of my space and when I first received it and tried it out - it gives off a very soft and golden light ~
Much Metta and blessings ~ Coralina ~
4. Coralina, There are many
Coralina,
There are many manufacturer that present products that “replicate” many of the colors of daylight, yet they cannot emit the vibrations of the gamma and ultra rays from the sun, and this is what science is showing us, that we can experience corrective mood enhancement thru lighting elements, yet not duplicate that benefits and that we receive thru sunlight that effects our bio chemistry.
I am going to ask the PHD I studied with if there is research on the bio chemistry of vegetables grown in artificial light, it should be an interesting read!
Hopefully this rain lets up soon!

5. Rain ~
I must be blind Maelight - I just noticed your comment about our rain! lol~
Yes, can you believe it is still pouring here at my house!
6. Thank you Maelight ~
Thank you for following up on my inquiry about my sunlight lamp Maelight ~ My friend gave me the sunlight lamp with love but I have to admit - I always wondered about its claims to produce the properties of sunlight ~
For that reason I do not turn on the light for I have adequate lighting in my office without it ~ But the lampshade is very pretty so I leave it sitting on my corner table for decoration ~ Blessing Maelight for your expertise on this topic of your passion ~ Metta! ~ Coralina ~
7. Artificial light vs. Natural
Hi Maelight...hope you don't mind, but I have a comment pertaining to the question you will research into with the Phd.
Artificial light does not radiate a complete spectrum but instead produces a light with an excess of one or more of the color rays. The complete spectrum being red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. In the case of incandescent lighting, most of its light is yellow, orange and red, whereas the standard "cool white" fluorescent light emits mostly yellow-green light. The various so-called "sunlamps" produce either too much ultraviolet or too much infrared radiation and are definitely harmful.
In general, it has been observed that plants grown in artificial light lack the rugged constitution of plants grown under natural lighting conditions. Their growth may be stimulated by subjecting them to longer hours of light, as compared to the natural light cycle of the revolving earth. But this forced growth produces plants bearing flowers and fruit of lesser quality and color appeal than those grown in sunlight. Another observation I have made is that it affects their texture and their taste. Vegetables and fruits are not as tasty when grown under artificial light.
Backing up DE's comment, I truly believe beautiful natural sunshine is healthier for most living organisms to thrive and be as healthy as possible.
Have a beautiful Sunday hermosa Maelight. Thank you for your comment on my posting about acupuncture! ;)

11. Beautiful colors!
Thanks Maelight for this wonderful piece of information! It is terrific that you were able to study with a Phd. of light sciences. I worked as an Ophthalmic Assistant for many years, as well as the Optical industry and I too studied much about light and its effects in a visual sense on humans.
An endless and amazing course of study.
It's a beautiful sunny day here in Austin...think I'll go outside and read for a little while to catch some great zzzzz's tonite. ;)
Blessings,

12. Gitana, That is so
Gitana,
That is so interesting, what a delicate line of work. . . .
It amazes me how the retail industry works on the public thru light and sound. I consult with a national restaurant chain that literally adjust sound and light in their restaurants from corporate HQ if they see a drop in sales …all from a “ Mother Board” ….it is just so odd.

13. Wonders of Ophthalmology!
Hi Gitana!
You share the same state as my best friend! :) I wish I could visit more often...for now I'll be glad that you are all having wonderful sunny weather! :)
I too worked in the field of Ophthalmology for a number of years! I worked in eye surgery and took to the study of eyes early...I think it was L. Davinci with his statement of 'the eyes being the windows to the soul', that caught my interest when I was 10. :)
The area of study is quite endless isn't it? There is so much we still do not know. I have had my own experience of losing my eye sight a few years ago and then having it returned to me months later..after the doctors felt it was gone for good. I can say that my appreciation for the study of the world through sight became more intense in some ways when my vision returned, but a curious thing, when one sense is gone, the others seem to intensify and it almost makes it possible to appreciate the world in a whole new light. I have often wondered, if we went without our eyesight, if we might use our 'inner eye' to see more and become more aware of our intuition?
Espero que disfruten del sol! :)
Love and Blessings,
Angelita
14. Windows to the soul ...
Sweet Angelita!
Thanks for your comment. Now you have another friend in Texas and you are welcome anytime you'd like to visit!
I love, "The eyes are the windows to the soul". I also like this quote from Helen Keller, "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision."
How interesting that you and I both worked in the field of Ophthalmology! I didn't work in eye surgery, however I was present in many Lasik surgeries. It was always amazing to me how immediately after a surgery a person that was considered legally blind before could actually see the world around them folllowing the removal of the retractors. It was a joy to see the glow on their faces as they looked around the room without any visual aid such as glasses or contacts.
I think it's amazing that your sight was restored after losing it. Was it due to a vitreous detachment or possibly diabetic retinopathy? Perhaps it was an experience given to you to heighten your appreciation of the world around you to an even higher degree and to sharpen your intuitiveness even more than before? A wonder and a blessing. I'm happy that your sight was restored.
It is said that the brain of a blind person is very interesting. For their brain is probably more active than a sighted person. 'Visualization' is more vivid and original as they don't have the reality of sight to distract them.
Gracias Angelita, have a beautiful sunlit filled day!
Tu amiga,
Gitana
15. Reminds me of rainbows! :)
Thank you for sharing this information! I'd love to hear how your client does and if she has success. It seems a chronic problem for many of the workforce that feeling rested, and getting a proper sleep is an issue and chances are most do not spend more than 10 mins a day outside, especially Monday to Friday.
Love and Blessings,
Angelita
