Mixed Reactions ~ 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

Coralina's picture

Today the leader of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, Thorbjørn Jagland, announced that US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ~

Global peace remains at the heart of the survival of humanity making the award one of the greatest honors one can achieve ~ I wonder if the award should be based on passed accomplishments or can it be based on hope for future events and policy ...   So far the reaction to Obama has been mixed and a gasp was heard at the announcement ~ Any thoughts?

1. Peace Prize news~

President Obama is on his way to Oslo this week to accept the Nobel Peace Prize ~

Here's an article about this week's event to share ~

"At war, honored for peace: Obama's tricky moment
By Ben Feller
Associated Press Writer

He's the Nobel Peace Prize winner who just ordered 30,000 more troops to war. He's the laureate who says he doesn't deserve the award. He's not quite 11 months on the job and already in the company of Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama.

When Obama leaves for Oslo, Norway, on Wednesday to be lauded for his style of international diplomacy, he goes knowing that the American people are more concerned about something else: peace of mind."

I have to admit, I was rather disappointed at this choice for Nobel Peace Prize.

3. puzzling ~

Dearest Sevara ~ Thank you for your thoughts! It is puzzling to me how these choices are made and I feel the gasps said alot ~

Here is something of related interest from the nobel prize org website regarding the peace prize: "Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) has become the strongest symbol of non-violence in the 20th century. It is widely held – in retrospect – that the Indian national leader should have been the very man to be selected for the Nobel Peace Prize. He was nominated several times, but was never awarded the prize."

I think, Yannaki, the two scientists that won a Nobel prize in the mapping of atoms within our cell's energy centers is a wonderful example of the Nobel prize work in bringing attention to deserving lesser known names of great accomplishments! ~
