Fair Trade Coffee - An Ethical Choice for Co-op
Monday, June 11, 2007 - In the "Gabriola Sounder"

Making a difference... Mid Island Co-op takes the initiative to be the first on Vancouver Island area to switch all coffee sold in its gas bars to fairly traded. This includes Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Gabriola Island and the newly renovated Parksville gas bar.

Fair trade coffees are purchased through direct trade from cooperatives of small coffee producers and ensure fair prices for the coffee growing farmers. Ensuring a fair price is just the beginning of what Fair Trade is about. The Fair Trade system also aims to improve the quality of life of coffee growers by establishing a long term commitment between coffee growers and buyers, by encouraging producers who use environmentally-friendly farming methods, and by contributing to community development.

Co-op members believe in the ethical values of social responsibility and commitment to supporting community. This includes taking a leadership role by questioning how our coffee purchases affect communities where the beans are grown.

Next time you stop by any of your eight locations, try out the line of fairly traded coffee from decaf and medium roast to Mexican dark roast.

Why is it that a multi-million dollar company such as Tim Horton's raises prices on their less than nutritious menu by 4-7 cents and gas bars in BC are serving ethical coffee beans at all their stores? GREED/SOCIAL IRRESPONSIBILITY! Think of the difference that Timmies could make if they opted for ethical coffee beans. I believe that the difference in cost passed on to the consumer would be only a couple of cents. I think people could swallow the increase for a good cause. These companies assume that we are all just as money hungry and socially unaware as they are. I emailed the Tim Horton's head office about this issue and of course. No Reply. Not even a form letter. BAD BUSINESS AS WELL!
I also wondered why it is that most of the increases are in socio-economically depressed places such as the Atlantic provinces? A donut and coffee is breakfast to many children whose families cannot afford healthy food. A donut and coffee is less expensive than a mutli-grain bagel with light cream cheese. Why not promote a breakfast program and fund it at schools where kids could get bagels and fruit juice. Instead they exploit a dependent group of people who have limited choices available to them.
The point is... that if these super companies wanted to make a change and promote more ethical and healthier practices ....they could. BUT THEY WON'T. Not until the consciousness changes. I believe that people think that questioning the world around us somehow means we are opposing the authority base. I believe that we just believe that the playing field should be levelled to give everyone the same chance to lead a happy, healthy life. The barriers that many people face make their choices very limiting. I wonder what the great Tim Horton would think of his namesake now?????

Corporate greed - OH NO! NOT TIMMIES!! :O

Ey Alfalfasprout! - great seein ya again n' thnx for postin up dat interestin' story about Tim Horton's - "CANADA'S MOST FAMOUS ICE KREEM n' COFFEESHOP" - my bro is addicticed to it! (he luuuvs their iced cappucino slurpies - YUM!)

OH NO!!! - NOT TIMMIES!! - what are they doin mayn?? - BAD BAD'S!! :O :O

It's great to see that there are a few corporations in business dat do follow ethical standards and are able to keep their customers happy - Da fair trade system is something dat many companies should try experimenting with - Not only for keepin prices at a reasonable level, but ensurin' that their products are of da highest quality w/o use of illegal or bad methods - havin' da customers in mind and havin' a proper etiquette of social responsibility - DAT RIGHT! Kuz it all comes down to da customers! - GOTTA KEEP EM SMILIN!! ;) ;)

Unfortunately in dis krazy world, Greed n' Selfishness is a widespread epidemic - especially in da corporate realm....where da biggie corporations run by hot-shot CEOs n' supervisors devise unethical schemes n' deception to make things go in their favor - with one goal in mind....."to amass n' collect as much money as they can....by any means necessary - screw da customers!" - We've seen it all da time, from da local retail shops to big corporations like Enron - seems like after a while, no amount of profit is ever enough, and they just want to go overboard....suckin' out every dollar bill from their customer's wallets.....so da haughty CEOs can live their lavish lifestyles in huuuge mega-mansions n' rollin' in Bentleys.....laughin out loud behind our backs ~ SuX yo!

Such businesses have fallen apart from this abuse of practices - and their services have suffered as well.....for example.....Sprint has been voted in a business magazine as the worst on da Top 10 list of really bad services....chargin' ridiculous prices for services dat normally cost less - to even da junky customer support they provide - which is quite sad.....Not too far behind is Verizon, a New-York-based telecommunications company - which I have known firsthand to be a very pig-headed n' junky service....(We've been a customer for years.....until recently) - After we've seen our monthly bills rise and rise ever so slowly....from our phone to da high-speed service (even called customer support.....and only to be put on hold for hours and treated quite rudely by some pyscho dudette - readin' a manual....sheesh!) -

It seems like some huge companies dat are dominating a certain location....since they're da only ones around and knock out any competition......they call da shots and since they expect dat everyone will depend on them.....don't try hard at all and think they have this self-asserted right to be as brash as they can to their customers and overcharge up to WAZOO for everything - totally unfair!

It makes me upset and sad to see a great ice kreem n' coffeeshop such as Tim Horton's taking this direction in their business practices - One can make a good profit w/o playin around w/ customers, for without them, remember dat business can't survive - I hope one day such things will be a thing of a past, and we can get a cup of coffee or a donut, burger n' fries, or da AWESUM kool online service not worrying about bein' backstabbed by da dudes in da funky-lookin' armani business suits (da big-cheeses behind it all) ~

till them, BE ON DA LOOKOUT YOOZ! - ;)

~ Peace, Love, Joy ~

Thanks Yannaki

Hola: it's been a while.... the end of the school year for me is CRAZY!!! But I'm on vacation now! Great responses to my blog. I'll be posting lots more as I have the time now.
Just to continue this discussion...Those who make the rules never really have to live in their consequences. This happens all the time in the school system. Many administrators have often spent only a few years actually in the shoes of a classroom teacher. The best administrators are those who were on the front line with students and parents for 10-15 years at least before going to the other side of administration. They make informed decisions and try to compromise and look out for everyone to the best of their ability as well as challenging policies andprocedures. It really comes down to empathy. Unfortunately this quality seems to be dwindling in our society. But I always know I will be met with positive energy, compassionate thinking and kindess on DEO with all of you. Someday we should have a big retreat somewhere in a beautiful place by the sea where we can all finally meet in person. What a delightful and powerful day that would be.

Blessings for a lovely day

socially responsible

That's a great story, Alfalfasprout, about the Mid Island Co-op switch to fairly traded coffee - An important since the coffee industry is so big throughout the world! Great to see the independent company being socially responsible ~

Tim Horton needs to get with it! Even the giant Starbucks Coffee industry appears to be making an effort to be more socially responsible - and show concerns about the environment as well!

Here is some information I found about the Seattle based and global Starbucks Company in relation to their role in the environment and social responsibility -

http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/envaffairs.asp

http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/csr.asp

Good to know they seem to be making an effort ...

But a side note about coffee ...watch the caffeine or any stimulant consumption everyone! (This is something I was reminded of by something Sevara said.)

Thanks again Alfalfasprout for insight into the issue of social responsibility ~
