Avoid Sugar and Caffeine - Natural Energy Boosters That Work
(NaturalNews) Are you searching for quick ways to improve your concentration and performance? Do you need to stay alert and focused? How about improving your level of performance without caffeine and sugar? To stay alert and smart, your brain needs glucose. But grabbing a sugary snack to improve your mental energy will not work in the long run.
It's true that eating something that contains sugar will improve your mental performance because of the quick spike of glucose. Eating a candy bar makes us feel great for a short time. But this won't be effective in the long run.
Why? Because after the quick glucose spike, your glucose level will then drop dramatically and when this happens your brain will lose its ability to concentrate on anything. Often we even lose our will power and common sense and may grab another candy bar to create a defeating cycle.
The key to long term stability is to avoid sugar. When you choose natural snacks instead, your body is able to utilize a slowly released supply of glucose. This will not set us up for that roller coaster of highs and lows.
Some easy keys for success:
* Start your day by eating a fiber-rich breakfast like oatmeal. This will deliver glucose over a longer period of time without the energy spike previously mentioned.
* By eating this morning meal that is high in fiber you will be more alert during the day. This has also been connected with more energy and less fatigue throughout the day.
* You may also have fewer memory problems, fall asleep faster and suffer less depression.
Instead of energy drinks that typically contain 8 teaspoons of sugar try an herbal-mineral tonic instead. A good tonic will invigorate and refresh you physically and mentally. This is accomplished by revitalizing a number of the body's systems.
Energy supplements that contain both herbs and minerals will give a boost. Look for supplements that contain potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and an energizing assortment of herbs. Pay special attention to ingredients and look for a formula that does not contain sugar. Herbal tonics are effective for increasing stamina, reaction speed, concentration and mental alertness.
Particularly effective are formulas that contain both minerals and small amounts of herbs that are beneficial to the brain. This includes:
* Ginkgo Biloba (improves memory)
* Ginseng (performance optimizer)
Other Natural Pick-me-ups:
* Some fats and cholesterol will aid in improving concentration and focus. Eating fish oils and the essential fatty acids in nuts and avocados is beneficial for concentration. This is especially true for children and people with attention deficit problems.
Cholesterol is important because it is needed for the brain to function properly. Cholesterol improves mental function in areas such as visual coordination, memory, attention and concentration. It has also been suggested that as someone's cholesterol level rises, their ability to learn, pay attention and remember rises as well. Be sure to keep your "good" cholesterol level high by eating lots of nuts and avocados.
* Bananas are a great pick-me-up because they are high in potassium. Potassium is a mineral your body needs to convert sugar in your blood into energy.
* Peppermint not only freshens your breath, it freshens your brain. The smell of peppermint has been shown to lower fatigue, increase alertness, and decrease frustration. Peppermint oil increases alertness by stimulating the trigeminal nerve (this is the same nerve that is activated by smelling salts). Try taking a long whiff of peppermint oil the next time you need a boost. Peppermint tea is also effective.
* Sometimes a boost is as simple as a drink of water. Dehydration is a significant factor in fatigue. A recent study found that even a 2% dip in one's hydration level (this would be the point where you would start to feel a bit thirsty) contributes to a decrease in short-term memory and even the ability to add and subtract.
* Another effective thing to try is bright light –- especially in the morning. Recent research suggests that bright light exposure early in the day can increase energy for the remainder of the day. This may be because light stimulates neurotransmitters in the brain and this in turn improves mood and motivation.
* Exercise begets more energy. If time is a problem, even a mini-work out can be effective. Light weight lifting has been shown to be effective in increasing energy levels.
Your body and brain will thank you for stepping off the rollercoaster that sugary food products produce. Try some of these natural ways to improve concentration and alertness and feel your brain get enhanced by nature's goodness.

Nice
This is a nice artical. I do love peppermint tea. The smell just makes me feel good. I like to get out for a walk and have lunch in the park on work days. It really makes me relaxed and I feel like I am on vacation all summer long.
balance
Great article Divine Earth! ~ The rush and initial highs followed by the crash or lows that too much sugar and caffeine create remind me of your prior discourses regarding the importance of balance in our lives ~
Sugar for example - I have observed people who are diabetic due to too much sugar in their diet... When someone is having a diabetic attack - notice it is suggested they eat a slice of bread or a cracker and not a sugar treat like a candy bar ~
Why some may ask ...because the carbohydrates in these foods are releasing sugar slowly into the body and so are avoiding the dangerous sugar highs and lows that a candy bar would create ~ Keeping in mind that carbohydrates are a form of complex sugar as opposed to refined sugar such as in candy which is a simple sugar ~
Sugar is found naturally in fruit in the form of fructose and safer and healthier to take into the body for there are only milligrams of sugar in a piece of fruit compared to the grams of sugar in a candy bar ~
Also foods like potatoes have sugar in the form of carbs and a healthier way to get our sugar requirements for the day ~
The body needs a certain amount of sugar/carbs but in moderation ...leading me back to the thought of balance in our lives ~
Your topic Divine Earth is a light which gently graces our paths of exploration ~
Ditto!
Great article on da effects of sugar n' caffeine in our diets Divinearth! - I agree w/ u n' Coralinni on this one!! ~ ;-)
DAT RIGHT!! - studies have shown how simple sugar in our diets (like in sweets n' concentrate fruit punches..) in large amounts can disrupt our normal body functions and take its toll on our metabolism n' cognitive response -- It gives us dat great energy jolt in a short term -- but leaves us feelin' sluggish n' worn out really quick!! ~ makin' us all fatigued n' moanin' a lot -- UuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugH!! ~ aw man!
Such sudden shocks into our metabolism affects our internal organs as well -- too much sugar in one shot...can damage our blood vessels...and in da long haul...can seriously mess up our pancreas, which creates da sugar metabolizin' enzyme "insulin". Those few become diabetics, which iz not kool!!!!
(Currently...there isn't a recomment daily percentage from da USDA of how much sugar should be in our diets - since it has no nutritional value...)
Also is da all too familiar pick-me-up "caffeine", which u can find in teas, coffee, pop, and other things...While most use it for an early mornin' jolt of energy....it affects da body in larger amounts --- causin' higher blood pressure, greater reports of insomnia and other sleep-related disorders...and in higher doses....can increase anxiety, nervousness ~ and other undesirable effects ~
(interestin' side note: One thing I discovered....is da nature of caffeine and its position within our society. One has to realize....it is a stimulant - a type of "pyschoactive" drug...which amazingly is legal for consuption everywhere. At higher doses...it can have similar withdrawal symptoms and can be dependent -- we become addicted to it. ~ At much higer doses it can even lead to death! --- it suprises me....how come these "drugs" such as caffeine, tobacco and alcohol are readily available ~ while others like cannabis (with its mind openin' properties...n' a very low toxicity - LD50) is illegal?? Just recently da FDA said...caffeine is completely "safe". Da dangers are just myths. And that bit of news was pumped out all over mainstream media sources - One belief shared by some....is dat our current society encourages it - our governments keep it legal...to keep us trapped in da illusion - to keep da corporate-run entities goin' strong...while keepin' us in da "dark"...not allowin' us to explore da deeper realities of life and such...And then....there's is da thought of "gov't control n' power". Really fascinatin' "conspiracy" stories I think!! ~)
YEPZ!! - so remember's! - Instead of grabbin' for dat candy bar or "ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK" (my bro's fav drink ironically...lol!!) -- rather grab a slice of whole grain breads n' complex carbohydrates --- or simply get more sleep!! ~ and to keep everything in moderation -- YEA!!!
~ Peace, Love, Joy ~
excellent info
This is excellent information especially for those who lead active lives etc. It's always very tempting to want a quick fix when your tired especially. Then you get pulled down into the syndrome of caffiene and/or sugar fixes. An important thing to remember is that caffiene is an alkaloid substance, it stimulates the cns[central nervous system].Therefore when the effect wears off you have the decrease of energy. How this works actually is that, caffiene constricts blood vessels causing your heart rate to increase and thus you have the false "feeling" of being energized. This is neither good for the heart, nor your blood vessels.Your cns is tricked into thinking it "needs" the caffeine in order to produce the energy you require of your body. This creates an unhealthy psycological addction as well, which is why it's so hard to get off the roller coaster once your on.I agree with Yannaki~keep everything in moderation~
