Shark Kills Swimmer at California Beach

By ALLISON HOFFMAN,
April 25, 2008

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (April 25) - A shark believed to be a great white killed a 66-year-old swimmer with a single, giant bite across both legs Friday as the man trained with a group of triathletes, authorities and witnesses said.

An 8-mile stretch of beach in San Diego County, Calif., was closed Friday after a shark attacked and killed a swimmer. Dave Martin, 66, was training in the ocean off Solana Beach with a group of triathletes when he was bitten by what was apparently a great white shark, officials said.
Dave Martin, a retired veterinarian from Solana Beach, was attacked at San Diego County's Tide Beach around 7 a.m., authorities and family friend Rob Hill said.

Martin was taken to a lifeguard station for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement on the Solana Beach city Web site. His injuries crossed both thighs, San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Randy Webb said in a news release.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography shark expert Richard Rosenblatt says the shark was probably a great white between 12 and 17 feet long.

"It looks like the shark came up, bit him, and swam away," said Dismas Abelman, the Solana Beach deputy fire chief.

There was a single bite across both of Martin's legs, Abelman said.

The attack took place about 150 yards offshore. Several swimmers wearing wetsuits were in a group when the shark attacked, lifeguard Craig Miller said. Two swimmers were about 20 yards ahead of the man when they heard him scream for help. They turned around and dragged him back to shore.

Swimmers were ordered out of the water for a 17-mile stretch around the attack site and county authorities sent up helicopters to scan the waters for the shark. Eight miles of beach were closed.

"The shark is still in the area. We're sure of that," Mayor Joe Kellejian said.

Hill, a member of the Triathlon Club of San Diego, said he was running on the beach while about nine other members were in the water when the attack took place.

"They saw him come up out of the water, scream 'shark,' flail his arms and go back under," Hill said. "The flesh was just hanging," and Martin may have bled to death before he left the water, Hill said.

A witness, Ira Opper, described the victim as "burly and athletic." He said the man was wearing a black wetsuit that was shredded on both legs

Martin's relatives visited the lifeguard station in small groups, emerging in tears, before his body was transported to the county medical examiner's office. A man who identified himself as Martin's son answered the telephone at Martin's home a few blocks from the beach but declined to comment on the attack.

Club members had been meeting at the beach for at least six years and never had seen a shark, Hill said.

However, Hill said he saw a seal or sea lion on the beach earlier this week. Miller said a seal pup was found on the beach Friday morning before the attack and was taken to a marine animal rescue center.

The shark may have confused the wet-suited swimmers with his prey, Hill said.

Rosenblatt, the shark expert, said white sharks travel through the area, and the way the man was attacked and the "massive" but clean wounds "sounds like what a white shark would do."

White sharks hunt along the bottom, look for seal silhouettes above and then rise to attack, he said.

"A human swimmer is not too unlike a seal," he said.

Shark attacks are extremely rare. There were 71 confirmed unprovoked cases worldwide last year, up from 63 in 2006, according to the University of Florida. Only one 2007 attack, in the South Pacific, was fatal.

The last fatal shark attack in California, according to data from the state Department of Fish and Game, took place in 2004, when a man skin diving for abalone was attacked by a great white shark off the coast of Mendocino County. On Aug. 19, 2003, a great white killed a woman who was swimming at Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County on the central California coast.

Solana Beach is 14 miles northwest of San Diego.

Associated Press writers Elliot Spagat and Chelsea J. Carter in San Diego and Robert Jablon and Solvej Schou in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

heads up

alegria

Thanks for the heads up Coralinna!I called my children to let them know incase they had not heard, and two of them were headed for the beach in the nearby area. I cautioned them to stay at home and use the pool instead as they would not be admitted anyhow. They gladly took my advice and thanked me. I thank you , as I would not have heard the a.m. news for San Diego county! My daughter did say she had heard that perhaps the sharks were migrating and it's best to stay clear for awhile! On another note, on the east coast, there have been an unusual number of migrating whales this year. Instead of the approximate amount of 30-50 being spotted. This year the first spotting reported 500! Astounded authorities are trying to figure out why.Who knows?

your children

Yes, I remember you mentioned to me that your children live in Southern California, alegria! ~ It looks like things are getting back to normal here and even saw some surfers yesterday...There are warning signs posted but that is their choice!

That's interesting about the increase in migrating whales on the east coast ... perhaps the global warming studies might reveal some connection - I have been on whale watching boat tours here and it was an awesome experience to see these giants of the ocean up close ~ When I worked at the Natural History Museum.. one of my assignments was to illustrate the migrating patterns of the whales on the west coast ~

note ~

The average number of fatalities per year is less than one per year from unprovoked shark attacks (or less than 4 to 5 per year world-wide in recent years according to wikipedia) ~ That is why I share this local news event with Divine Earth because it is so rare - not to feed into fear ~

I have great respect for sharks which are one of the most ancient living creatures ~ The fossil of sharks extend back over 450 million years ago before vertebrates existed...Modern sharks can be traced back to around 100 million years ago ~

Sharks have cartilagenous skeletons instead of bones ~

Contrary to popular belief, only a few sharks are dangerous to humans. Out of more than 360 species, only four have been involved in a significant number of fatal, unprovoked attacks on humans which include the great white shark ~

Great white sharks are immensely powerful creatures that have survived the millenia ~

A rare event ~

EEEK! - me've been keepin' up w/ da latest news on da whole story since yesterday! - Thnx for sharin' da info. w/ us Coralinni! - my heart & prayers reaches out to da family involved in da shark incident - :-|

but dat's an important thing to note Coralinni! - about da rarity of shark attacks -

"The average number of fatalities per year is less than one per year from unprovoked shark attacks (or less than 4 to 5 per year world-wide in recent years according to wikipedia) ~ That is why I share this local news event with Divine Earth because it is so rare - not to feed into fear"

While these unfortunate things happen.....one must note it is such a rare event -- most sharkies spend their time away from da coast in da deep blue --- and whose main diet is focused around fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and seals if they're close by ---- but they're so dopey......they can easily mistake a floatin' can in da water, a boat, surfboard, or wet suit for food! - DAT RIGHT!!

And while there are attacks --- their risk, compared to others -- isn't great.....in fact, sharkies can be shy creatures.....they are more afraid of us and we are of it! -- believe it or not........Actually, here's a kool trick! - and really works!

Whenever confronted by a shark (unfortunately) --- if u can, just kick or punch da top or side of its head --- and they get scared and swim away.....keepin' away from u - it's krazy!! Also, just as amazin' --- dat sharks have a certain mysterious fear of dolphins -- (they are mammals, not fish!!) -- seems like whnever a dolphin is present.....even if there is a fresh food source -- da shark will just shy away from da area like a frightened puppy.......for real! -- Dat's one of da reasons i luv da dolphins soo much......such graceful beautiful mystic sea creatures w/ a tender heart & soul of compassion ~

So it shows dat it's a rarity for these unfortunate things to happen --- one must respect mother nature and its wonder -- and despite these things, still embrace da beauty & wonder of nature.....continuin' to live.........not in fear, but in humble reverence ~

I have heard that too!

"Sharks have a certain mysterious fear of dolphins." I have head that about sharks too Yannaki!

Sharks are amazing creatures that date back before the dinosaur and no wonder that the public has a fascination for them~

The fact that this news story happened right here at the beaches I grew up playing in and currently take my weekend walks along its shores ...affected me deeply - a much more personal perspective than someone reading it from a distance as a news story~

Today, Yannaki, there were surfers out in the water at their own risk - Scientist stated that it is possible the shark could still be in our local waters ..Their warnings are not feeding fear into the community but instead feeding caution to the public ...they are only concerned about our safety ~ I commend our beach patrols that have looked at the situation with level heads and common sense procedures in force ~ Soon I feel everything will be back to normal but with a wise note of caution in the public's consciousness when swimming beyond the waves ...of the event that happened yesterday ~ Again ..sending my prayers for the victim and his loved ones ~

attack response

In respect and with condolences to Dave Martin, family and friends, I sympathize with your loss.

I hope to come to a deeper understanding of this tragic event by the following questions.

Is our environment which includes the Animal kingdom responding to our collective consciousness?

 to the mob mentality?

to the projection of fear or by the re-telling and building-up and spreading of our fearful stories?

to the absence of awareness and human practise of compassion, love, acceptance?

How do we know the Shark doesn’t deny it’s instinct and even attack or kill for pleasure? (in direct response of our collective consciousness)
