Mark Serreze, the center's senior scientist, said there's a 50-50 chance the North Pole will be completely free of ice for a brief time this summer. "Five years ago, to think that we'd seven be talking about the possibility of the North Pole melting out in the summer, I would have never thought it, " Serreze said. Last year, the ice retreated enough to open the Northwest Passage, the sea route through the Arctic, for the first time in recorded history.
